The Yucatan Peninsula, in the south east of Mexico has an area of 200 000 square kilometres. There are not very many rivers or lakes there, because surface water leaks through porous limestone, then flows into underwater rivers and accumulates in underwater lakes. Sometimes when a rock collapses a very unusual form starts- a crater filled with water called a "cenot". There are more than 2000 of them in Yucatan.
"Cenots" and underwater rivers are a truly world -class diving attraction in Mexico. They are usually situated in rainforests and the entrance is often surrounded by palm trees and other tropical plants. Water in "cenots" and underwater rivers is very clear. Divers move between enormous stalagmites and stalactites. Small rock chambers and huge halls are joined together by straits. Irregular blocks of rock make everything look majestic. When planning diving in Mexico, one should make sure you visit the Turtle Reef or places near Cozumel Island, where whilst diving between wonderful coral canyons, you can see different kinds of shark, which are an usual sight in the Caribbean Sea.
We would like to invite everybody to this unforgettable land of tequila and spicy Mexican food.
