Exploring Mogán House Reef in Gran Canaria - an easy divesite with Potential

Mogán House Reef is known for its clear waters (on the ocean side of the wavebreak) and a moderate variety of marine life. The site offers easy entrance to the water from protected by wavebreak sandy beach so even during less than perfect weather (which is very rare) there is no problem with entering or leaving the water.

The dive is easy and the water nice and clear however you need to cross the surrounded by the wavebreak small artificial bay where the water is usually a bit murky so we advise to just cross is on the surface and go down on the other side where the visibility is usually quite good.

The site is very good for beginners but it's not boring.

Along the bearch there are plenty of restaurants where you and your family or friensd can eat, drink and relax. If you're accompanied by someone who don't dive there is plenty of things to do on the beach or close by. Few steps away are also shops, perfumeries and more,

Marine Life to Expect

Divers at Mogán House Reef can encounter a variety of marine creatures, including:

  • Barracuda - sleek predators are often seen patrolling the reef. To see the really big ones you probably should choose other dive spot but yoy surelly can meet here some smaller specimens.
  • Trumpet Fish - a fascinating species found in the waters around the Canary Islands. Known for its elongated, slender body and distinctive trumpet-like snout, this fish can reach up to 80 cm in length. Usuali swimms or hover close to rocks under weird angles.
  • Flounders - they are a bit harder to spot because they like to hide in the sand and the only well visible part is their eyes.
  • Salemas - they are quite common in this place. Some are used to people feeding them with bananas wich they like a lot. So if you have something yellow and long they will approach you in great quantities. Of course they are totally not dangerous.
  • Octopus- known for their intelligence and camouflage, octopuses are big fun to watch. They are usually a bit shy but also playful and friendly.
  • Moray Eels - these eels can be found hiding in crevices and rocky outcrops but more likely in the sandy botton in the deeper parts of the site (7 or more meters)
  • Angel Sharks - though not common, these flat-bodied sharks are occasionally spotted resting on the seabed. They are not aggresive and never attack humans on their own but you absolutely shouldn't touch them or bother or annoy them. They are sharks and have very sharp teeth. To see one is a great privilege. Normally they live much further in the ocean and deeper but sometimes you can find one on the sandy bottom on 7 meters or deeper.
  • Rays - pretty rare in this dive spot as they are very shy and like colder water.
  • Groupers and Wrasses and more..
